Recognizing, Honouring Our Veterans

Halifax, Nov 4--With each passing year since the end of Second World War and signing of the Korean Armistice in 1953,  recognition of the surviving Veterans of those conflicts takes on greater significance, says Commodore (Ret’d) Bruce Belliveau, president of Nova Scotia Branch of Naval Association of Canada (NSNAC).

He urged residents to take time to recognize and thank the Veterans of those wars, follow on conflicts and the Cold War era during remembrance events leading up to Remembrance Day Nov 11.

“We need to honour all those who served--including those who made the ultimate sacrifice-- defending the democratic way of life we enjoy today,” Belliveau, a 32 years RCN veteran and son of a Naval Veteran, explained.

Given the current world situation that recalls events that lead up to Second World War, Remembrance Day ceremonies provide an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of Canadians and our Allies who eventually prevailed in the deadliest conflict in human history.

Belliveau recalled meeting a number of Halifax-Dartmouth area veterans at a recent reception for Veterans hosted by NSNAC and the Royal United Services Institute (NS). The group included an Army Veteran who had served in both WW ll and Korea and the others included Army and Navy Veterans of the Korean conflict.

“Meeting the Veterans face to face and learning of their service can be a little humbling but a most rewarding experience. It’s also helpful in advancing NSNAC’s mission, including increasing public awareness of our region’s rich naval and marine heritage,” he concluded.
