Speaker's Evening: Monday 13 November 2023
Our guest speaker for November is Kevin F. Hayes, Military Liaison - Green Fleet at the National Research Council of Canada. He will talk about the ‘greening’ of large vehicle fleets as they relate to the military, including the Navy. He will address such topics as the need for a coordinated effort while also debunking myths—both local and on social media—around electrification.
Biography
Mr. Hayes has worked in defence systems design, integration and testing both privately and publicly for over 30 years. He is a graduate Engineering Technologist, Senior Project Manager and Business Development Officer and acts as liaison to the Canadian military for the National Research Council of Canada’s Transportation Engineering Research Centre.
He started his career in 1985 as a draftsman and design engineer for the Royal Canadian Navy where he worked until 1995. He then worked for some prominent defence contractors prior to re-joining the Public Service at the National Research Council in 2002.
Starting as a Senior Project Manager at the NRC, he undertook the design and integration of the Army’s EW Bison/ MEWT Fleet and in 2005 he became NRC’s Military Business Development Manager and Liaison to the Canadian Armed Forces.
He is considered a subject matter expert in military vehicles and small and auxiliary vessels and has represented the NRC both nationally and internationally as a keynote speaker on various engineering, technical and government initiative subjects.
Mr. Hayes is an avid volunteer, has served on many municipal boards, has owned and operated several private businesses, including a 100 slip marina and is a registered Marine Vessel Surveyor, having operated his own marine surveying business for over 30 years. He is active in local politics in his home town.
In his spare time Mr. Hayes enjoys playing hockey and messing about with old and classic boats.
He currently acts as liaison to the Canadian Armed Forces for “Greening of Fleets” with the NRC’s Clean, Energy Efficient Transportation (CEET) program.
